The Swiss Army’s large, interactive display at the Olma fair in St Gallen has drawn criticism from politicians over its cost and presentation of military equipment, SRF reports. The 2,000-square-metre exhibition features tanks, weapons, cybersecurity and horses, with 250 military personnel on duty during the fair’s 11 days.

St Gallen Social Democrat MP Arbër Bullakaj criticised activities that let children climb on tanks, handle anti-tank weapons and simulate firing. He said they risked making war seem like a game and glossing over the consequences of military equipment and conflict.

The Army puts the display’s material costs at about 300,000 francs, excluding personnel. Major General Willy Brülisauer said the aim was not to glamorise weapons but to explain them and show how the Army could protect the population. He described the fair as a strong draw for visitors.

Politicians are also divided over the exhibition’s size. Swiss People’s Party MP Walter Gartmann questioned the spending, while his party colleague Michael Götte defended the display as a way to show what the Army can do and what it still needs. Army Chief Benedikt Roos called the event a compromise and said its cost was justifiable. The Olma organisers said special exhibitions help create dialogue.

Social Democrat MP Barbara Gysi has submitted a parliamentary intervention on the display’s costs and benefits. It has not yet received a response.
