Fridays for Future Austria plans demonstrations in seven Austrian states on Friday, including in Innsbruck, ORF reports. The climate movement says it wants to increase pressure for stronger climate action after this summer’s record heat.
The group is calling for affordable, climate-friendly transport and targeted support for farmers facing drought damage. Organisers in Tyrol also criticised the federal climate protection law, saying it would be ineffective without penalties for violations.
In Innsbruck, the protest is planned for the Marktplatz, or market square. Fridays for Future describes the events as a large-scale strike, where participants will publicly express their anger over heat stress and what they consider inadequate measures to address it.
The group in Tyrol says older people, children, pregnant women and people with chronic health conditions are particularly vulnerable to heat.
Fridays for Future has staged several protests in Tyrol in recent years. In June last year, demonstrators rode bicycles along part of the Inntal motorway to protest, among other things, heavy transit traffic through the region.
