Pfänder Tunnel faces safety-test closures this week

Tuesday 13th October 2026 on 06:30 in Austria

Pfänder Tunnel, traffic, Vorarlberg

The east tube of the Pfänder Tunnel is closed continuously until 00:00 on Friday, October 16, for safety tests following renovation work, ORF reports. ASFINAG expects delays and congestion, particularly during morning and evening rush hours.

Traffic is being routed through the west tube, with one lane operating in both directions. The west tube will also close completely on the nights of October 14 to 15 and October 15 to 16, from 21:00 to 06:00. During those closures, traffic will be diverted through the city of Bregenz.

The tests are required before the renovated east tube can fully reopen. ASFINAG says they cannot be carried out while traffic is running because some safety systems will not be fully available during checks.

Further work is due to take place at night from October 19, with the east tube closed again and traffic routed through the west tube. Both tubes are expected to be open without restrictions at weekends, and all renovation work is scheduled to be completed by October 24.
