Twenty divers removed about 25 kilograms of rubbish from the Schwarzsee and Herzsee mountain lakes in Montafon over the weekend, ORF reports.
The waste included drinks cans, plastic bottles, fishing line and equipment, ski goggles and signs from ski slopes.
Getting to the lakes was challenging, particularly the approach to Herzsee. A quad was needed to transport luggage, while the remaining equipment had to be carried on foot from a storage point near the ski tunnel.
Cold water and stirred-up mud also made the cleanup difficult by sharply reducing visibility underwater. Participants from the PADI Aware Foundation said they were pleased to have worked together to make the natural environment cleaner.
