A pilot project in Lower Austria aims to make municipal vacancies easier to find by encouraging local authorities to list more jobs on the AMS platform, ORF reported.
Only about one in five vacancies in the public sector is currently submitted to the AMS for recruitment, according to a statement. Many municipalities advertise jobs on other platforms. The initiative, launched by the AMS, the Lower Austrian Municipal Association and the Association of Social Democratic Municipal Representatives, aims to change that.
Municipal human resources staff are being encouraged to post vacancies on the AMS online job platform “alle jobs”. Listings will carry the label “Gemeindejobs” to help jobseekers find them. The platform has about 140,000 vacancies and is Austria’s largest job platform, according to the statement.
The initiative’s supporters say municipal work can provide a route into employment. One in four people newly hired in the public sector in 2025 had previously been unemployed, the AMS said. That amounted to 1,602 people.
AMS Lower Austria head Sandra Kern said the project would help municipalities present themselves as attractive employers and connect jobseekers with regional opportunities. Lower Austrian Municipal Association president Johannes Pressl said closer cooperation between municipalities would affect workforce planning and make staff development strategies necessary.
The pilot began on October 12 and could provide a basis for expanding the model to other Austrian states.
