Swiss national team coach Murat Yakin says he has no intention of stepping down while he still enjoys the job. He spoke with host Stefan Büsser on SRF’s “Late Night Switzerland,” where the interview ranged from retirement rumours to comments about his appearance.
Asked whether he had considered retiring at the peak of his career, after what Büsser described as a successful World Cup and four consecutive Nations League wins, Yakin said: “Not for a long time. As long as I enjoy it.” He praised the players and coaching staff and said he was proud to lead the national team.
The conversation also touched on what Yakin called “certificate discussions” involving the team. He described the episode as an unfortunate moment, said the matter was private and hoped it was now resolved so the players involved could attend the next meeting.
Büsser asked how Yakin handled being judged on his looks. The coach said he was honoured by the attention but glad to be recognised as a coach. He also accepted a line from the “New York Times” comparing him to “the cigarette you smoke after sex.” Büsser called it an insult; Yakin joked that perhaps he did not know the whole foreplay.
Asked about players sneaking out before important matches, Yakin laughed and said they should make sure they were not caught. He said his own days of doing that as a player were more than 20 years ago.
When Büsser asked about possible interest from clubs or other national teams, Yakin replied: “The Hollywood chapter is over for me.” He said he was happy to coach Switzerland for as long as possible.
