Declarations to perform civilian service in Vorarlberg have risen 16% this year, with 792 received so far, ORF reports. The increase is the second-highest among Austria’s federal states.

In the first nine months of the year, 647 young men began civilian service, covering 88% of the reported demand. The service is an alternative to military service and is often seen as a way to contribute to society.

Most civilian service workers support social services and people with disabilities, including through organisations such as Lebenshilfe and Caritas. Rescue services and care for older people are also important areas of work.
