Lower Austria, Pfaffenschlag, road crash

Two drivers died in a head-on collision in Pfaffenschlag, in the Waidhofen an der Thaya district, on Friday morning, ORF reported. Police said a 19-year-old driver crossed into the oncoming lane and hit a car driven by a 60-year-old man.

The younger driver had been travelling on the B5 from Dimling towards Pfaffenschlag when his car left the road, crossed the verge and entered the opposite lane. Both men, who were from the Gmünd district, became trapped in their vehicles. Firefighters freed them, but both died at the scene despite resuscitation efforts.

The vehicles were destroyed and thrown about 50 metres apart by the impact. The engine was torn from the 60-year-old’s car, police said. Firefighters, Red Cross teams, police and an emergency medical helicopter attended the scene.

The B5 was closed during the response, with traffic diverted through Großeberharts.
