A fire destroyed an unoccupied mountain hut and a nearby shed in Spiss, in Landeck district, on Thursday evening, ORF reported. No one was at the scene when firefighters arrived.

The fire broke out at about 7.53pm, and the hut was already fully ablaze by the time emergency crews reached it. Firefighting was difficult because there was no water available nearby and several gas cylinders threatened to explode.

Access also posed a challenge, with tanker fire engines struggling to get close to the buildings along a forest road. Crews eventually brought the fire under control.

The cause of the fire was not yet known and was under investigation by police. About 70 emergency responders attended in 10 vehicles, including firefighters from Spiss, Samnaun in Switzerland and Pfunds. A Red Cross paramedic was also present.
