A new central vocational school in Vienna’s Seestadt Aspern is due to begin teaching in September 2028, bringing seven vocational schools together under one roof, ORF reports. It is expected to serve 7,500 young people, with about 2,500 on site at any one time.
The school will cover 49,000 square metres across several buildings. It is being built next to an existing secondary school and a campus for kindergarten and primary school children. The project will use low-carbon cement and geothermal energy, with photovoltaic panels planned for a later stage.
Architect Christian Kronaus said the design aims to reflect different working environments. Plans include a large passage modelled on a shopping centre for retail students, a construction yard for building trades and three towers designed to resemble office spaces.
The final section of the promenade along the lake that gives Seestadt its name is also being completed. Workers are dismantling the existing wooden boardwalk plank by plank, and the timber will be reused in temporary-use projects. The route around the lake is expected to reopen for walkers in spring 2027.
New homes along the promenade are due to be completed from 2028. Development is also continuing on the previously undeveloped side towards Aspern Nord station. Ingrid Spörk, a spokesperson for the Seestadt development company Wien 3420, said a future tram could take passengers from the station along the district’s central shopping street to Zaha-Hadid-Platz, a square.
