A narrow majority of SRF’s “dialog” community supports easing Switzerland’s arms export rules, according to a non-representative poll reported by SRF. The revised War Material Act, which the Federal Council supports, will go to a public vote on November 29.
Supporters say current export rules are outdated and that exports to selected European and Asian countries would benefit Swiss businesses. Some also point to Switzerland’s reliance on arms imports for its own defence, arguing that cooperation is reciprocal. Others say exports sustain jobs, innovation and competitiveness, while helping preserve defence capabilities the country could need in a crisis.
Opponents argue that maintaining the arms industry is not worth the financial and moral risks of taking sides in a conflict. They also say loosening the rules would undermine Switzerland’s neutrality and its role in peace efforts. Some fear it could align the country with European and Atlantic powers, while others oppose arms exports on moral grounds.
The poll found that 52 percent of participants backed the proposed easing of export rules.
