A fundraising campaign has been launched for a former supermarket cashier ordered to repay 25,700 euros after giving customers unjustified discounts, ORF reported. The 23-year-old was sentenced in Linz on Wednesday to five months in prison, suspended.

According to the indictment, he repeatedly reduced prices at the checkout without a valid reason. Discounts can be given for items that are damaged or past their expiry date, but he also manually lowered prices when those conditions did not apply. He did not benefit financially from the discounts.

The former cashier said he was afraid of demanding customers, who sometimes loudly insisted on receiving discounts. He is now an apprentice in another industry and must repay the damages gradually from his apprentice wages.

Donations to the GoFundMe campaign were rising quickly towards its target on Thursday afternoon. Organiser Patrick Frewein wrote that the 23-year-old should be able to take responsibility without one mistake determining his entire future.
