Tyrol will restore district-level heats of its youth speech contests in February and March 2027, Governor Anton Mattle told ORF Tirol. The contests’ local rounds were dropped in the 2025/26 school year, prompting widespread criticism.

The contests have been held for decades and give young people a chance to take part in public debate. Local preliminaries, often supported by schools or youth centres, help participants prepare to speak before an audience.

The state had justified dropping the district events by citing a lack of interest. However, representatives from school and out-of-school education said demand was not the reason. Critics, including the Greens and Tyrol’s child and youth ombudsman, said the decision restricted young people’s participation.

Mattle, who took over responsibility for youth affairs after state councillor Astrid Mair resigned in August, said young people across Tyrol should have the opportunity to express their views and contribute ideas. He said the contests support democracy and that bringing the events closer to participants could encourage more to take part.

The district heats are scheduled for February 22 to March 12, 2027. People aged 13 to 24, including students, apprentices and young adults in employment, can enter. Registration will be open from January 18 to February 14 through schools or employers.

Top participants in the district rounds can qualify for the state final in Innsbruck on April 7, followed by the national youth speech contest. Tyrol will also help fund rhetoric seminars to prepare participants, paying up to 150 euros per session. Companies, associations and individuals can organise seminars and apply for funding from the state.
