Tagged deer spark questions in Salzburg’s Großarl valley
Hunters have reported red deer with ear tags in forests around Großarl, raising questions about whether the animals escaped from enclosures or were deliberately released, ORF reports. Authorities have been informed.
Several tagged deer have reportedly been seen, and some have been shot. Hunters say the animals also appeared unusually tame, leading to suspicions that they came from a deer-breeding enclosure.
Releasing red deer from enclosures is generally prohibited and allowed only in exceptional cases with official approval. The rules are intended in part to prevent diseases spreading to wild animals.
Possible reasons for a deliberate release could include strengthening a small deer population. Experts say that is unlikely to be the motive in the Großarl valley, where red deer are plentiful. Another possibility is “blood refreshment”, the introduction of animals with particular genetic traits. This could also be intended to produce larger antlers and more sought-after hunting trophies.
Salzburg’s senior hunting official, Max Mayr-Melnhof, confirmed he had heard about the cases but said he did not believe the deer had been deliberately released. They may instead have escaped from an enclosure. Their origin remains unclear.
