Firefighters rescued a mare from a muddy pond in Trabenig after she became trapped and risked drowning, ORF Kärnten reported.

The horse, named Safira, had recently arrived at a horse farm in the municipality of Wernberg. Her owner used a lead rope to keep the mare’s head above water while calling for help. Twenty firefighters responded.

The team first pumped water out of the pond, then used a municipal crane to lift the horse from the mud. Firefighter Thomas Klose said the mare’s movements had been taking her deeper into the sludge, making a swift rescue necessary.

Safira was exhausted but, according to a veterinarian, uninjured. Some of the firefighters were experienced horse owners and knew how to handle her, Klose said.
