Austria, farming, workplace accident

An 86-year-old retired farmer has died after being run over by a manure spreader in Waldzell, in the Ried im Innkreis district, ORF reported.

Police said the man was spreading manure on a recently harvested, gently sloping cornfield on September 29. He was driving a tractor with a fully loaded manure spreader when he got off for an unknown reason, fell near the spreader and landed face down.

The tractor’s parking brake apparently released, and the spreader’s rear wheel ran over the man, coming to a stop on his left leg.

A 58-year-old neighbour, who lived about 100 metres away, heard his cries for help. The neighbour briefly reversed the tractor, freeing him.

Paramedics treated the man at the scene before he was taken to Ried Hospital with severe injuries. He died there on Sunday.
