The safety upgrade at the A2 junction in Wöllersdorf has been completed, ORF reports. New bypass lanes and an automated traffic-light system are intended to prevent queues from backing up onto the motorway.

The junction connects the A2 South Motorway with the B21 road in the Wiener Neustadt district. Bypass lanes have been built at both roundabouts, allowing some traffic to pass without entering them. The B21 has also been resurfaced across about 18,000 square metres.

Detection loops on the motorway exit ramps identify when traffic is backing up from the roundabouts. The system then temporarily stops traffic on the B21, allowing vehicles leaving the motorway to enter the roundabouts more easily.

The project cost about 5.5 million euros, according to the state. Lower Austria is contributing about 3.5 million euros, with the state and ASFINAG jointly responsible for the work.

The junction had been heavily congested, particularly during peak hours, with queues repeatedly reaching the exit ramps. The upgrade was announced in autumn 2025 after delays that included the need to acquire land.
