The ATHENA research lab at the University of Klagenfurt has developed methods to make video streaming faster and less energy-intensive, ORF reports. The lab will present its work at a free closing symposium on Wednesday, October 7, with advance registration required.

Opened seven years ago to research video streaming and new multimedia services, the lab aimed to improve video delivery across devices, from smartphones to televisions. Lab head Christian Timmerer said the team had developed a method for faster livestreaming that uses less energy. He hopes the technology will be incorporated into products and services in the coming years.

The lab has produced more than 150 publications, delivered over 100 scientific presentations and secured 20 patents. The project has also strengthened research in Klagenfurt by attracting staff from around the world, many of whom have stayed in Austria and contributed to its economy and scientific community.

The University of Klagenfurt and the Lakeside Park Klagenfurt location have benefited from increased research capacity, according to the report. A new project is scheduled to start in early 2027. The October 7 event will review the lab’s achievements and look at future developments.
