A former office building in Vienna’s Floridsdorf district is being converted into a centre for children’s culture with around 3,500 square metres of usable space, ORF reports. The project will include a second location for the Zoom Children’s Museum and a new centre for children’s literature.
The centre, planned near Floridsdorf railway station, will provide space for children and young people as well as group visits by kindergartens, schools and clubs. It aims to offer an age-appropriate, hands-on introduction to art, literature, media and science.
Architecture firm Kuehn Malvezzi is carrying out the project, which is due to be completed by the end of 2028. Reusing the existing office building is intended to save resources. The 1990s building will also be thermally renovated, fitted with new windows and solar panels on the roof, and given a new coloured ceramic facade.
The centre aims to promote multilingualism and inclusion. The Zoom Children’s Museum will contribute creative, studio and laboratory activities. The new children’s literature centre will welcome both keen readers and children who have had little access to books. Event rooms, creative spaces and exhibition areas will host reading, writing and discussion.
Kultur Raum Wien GmbH is backing the project and will set its cultural direction while supporting the renovation and conversion.
