Salzburg’s city senate approved new market regulations by a broad majority on Monday, expanding product ranges and outdoor café seating areas. The changes, reported by ORF, take effect on November 1.

At the Grünmarkt market on Universitätsplatz, larger outdoor café areas will be allowed from November, with expanded opening days, hours and space. Wine may also be officially served there. The new rules follow lengthy discussions between restaurant operators and market traders.

The Grünmarkt and Schranne markets will be able to offer wine, chocolate, nuts, tea and coffee products, among other goods. The city’s organic markets at Kajetanerplatz and in the Lehen district will also be included in the regulations. The allocation of Christmas market stalls is to be reviewed.

Opening days and hours will change at several Christmas markets, including those at Hellbrunn, Mirabellplatz and in the Old Town. Dogs will also be allowed at weekly markets if kept on a leash and wearing a muzzle.

Market stall fees will rise by 35.5 percent from January 1. They have not increased since 2018. Deputy Mayor Christoph Brandstätter said the rise was needed to help cover the city’s cleaning and waste collection costs.

The Green List voted against the new rules, arguing that measures on waste prevention, recycling and food waste were inadequate. The city’s market regulations had not been revised for more than 30 years.
