FC Südburgenland beat LASK 1-0 on Saturday to claim its first win in 13 months, ORF reported. The team from Stegersbach had gone 26 matches without a victory in the women’s Bundesliga.

Summer signing Valentina Forobosko scored shortly after half-time in the away match in Linz. Südburgenland was reduced by a red card a few minutes later but held on to its narrow lead.

The result lifted the Burgenland team off the bottom of the table. After nine matches, it has five points, moving ahead of Blau-Weiß Linz at the end of the first half of the season.

“This was no fluke, but the deserved reward for the hard work of recent weeks,” coach Michael Thek said. He added that the team was “much more competitive than last season”, when it finished last but avoided relegation after USV Neulengbach withdrew.

Captain Katja Graf said the team hoped to build on its renewed confidence in the coming weeks. Its next opponents are Vienna and Rapid, both of whom drew their first-half matches against Südburgenland. “We are looking forward to the second half of the season and want to pick up points more often,” Graf said.
