Five sections of the Rheintal/Walgau motorway in Vorarlberg are under construction, ORF reports. Work at Dornbirn-Süd has finished, reducing the number of active projects from six in spring, while several larger schemes will continue until the end of the year or beyond.
The longest project is between Feldkirch-Frastanz and Nenzing-Bludesch. ASFINAG is renewing the road surface, two bridges, drainage and guardrails. Traffic arrangements are due to change in mid-October for the next phase. The project is expected to cost about 48 million euros and finish by the end of 2028.
At Bludenz-Nüziders, the exit towards Germany has been open since July, but the on-ramp in that direction is expected to remain closed until mid- or late November. Several bridges are also being repaired, including one in the area of the L190 road. ASFINAG puts the cost at about 8.8 million euros.
Work is also under way at the Walgau-Süd rest stop, where 39 lorry spaces, 23 car spaces and new sanitary facilities are being built. More than 12 million euros has been allocated for the project, which is due to be completed in spring 2027.
Repairs between Altach-Götzis and Klaus-Koblach are expected to finish in mid-December. The L59 overpass between Götzis and Koblach reopened to traffic at the end of August. In March 2027, work is due to begin on the next section, between Altach-Götzis and the Rosenberger service area, including repairs to the road surface and several overpasses.
Checks and tests of the Pfändertunnel’s repaired safety equipment are scheduled for October. The eastbound tunnel tube is due to remain closed from October 12 to 16, with traffic routed through the westbound tube. On the nights of October 14 to 15 and October 15 to 16, the westbound tube is also due to close from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., requiring traffic to detour through Bregenz. ASFINAG said final discussions with authorities and emergency services are still under way, so the times could change.
