Burgenland’s State Museum is marking its 100th anniversary with two pop-up exhibitions in Eisenstadt while its building is closed for modernisation, ORF reported.

The exhibitions are on show at the Austrian Jewish Museum and the Leinner-Haus, the museum’s original home. The Austrian Jewish Museum exhibition focuses on the people who founded the State Museum, including Sandor Wolf and its first director, Alphons Barb, and also offers an insight into Burgenland’s Jewish history.

At the Leinner-Haus, visitors can see the range of the museum’s collection and how it has developed. Exhibits include a ballet shoe belonging to Eisenstadt dancer Fanny Elssler and the skeleton of a cave bear from Winden am See.

Curator Gert Polster also highlighted a curiosity: a captured Italian flag from the Second World War that was later re-catalogued, amusingly, as a Hungarian revolutionary flag.

Both pop-up exhibitions will run until September 2027. The State Museum is due to reopen in autumn 2027.
