Retailers in Salzburg expect a busy Saturday as German shoppers cross the border to buy goods, ORF reports. Shops on the Bavarian side are closed for German Unity Day on October 3.
The holiday is also expected to boost tourism and restaurant businesses in Salzburg. Stable weather is likely to support sales, according to the report.
Johann Höflmaier, head of the trade division at the Salzburg Chamber of Commerce, said the gains would extend beyond Salzburg’s old town. Furniture retailers around Eugendorf, in the Flachgau district, are also expected to benefit.
German Unity Day is considered a reliable economic driver for the Salzburg urban area, before sales typically ease ahead of the pre-Christmas shopping period. Heavier traffic is expected around shopping destinations on Saturday.
