Graz’s clock tower will glow pink at night through October 9 as a sign of solidarity with people affected by breast cancer, ORF Steiermark reported. The lighting is part of October’s breast cancer awareness campaign, which promotes prevention, early detection, research and treatment.
The campaign uses the Pink Ribbon to raise awareness and encourage people to book screening appointments. The pink lighting began on Thursday, October 1, World Breast Cancer Day.
The clock tower, a landmark in Graz, has taken part in the Global Illumination project since 2018. In the years before that, Graz City Hall was illuminated pink six times in cooperation with the city.
The display is intended to highlight the social effects of cancer, which can affect daily life, work, family and finances. Cancer Aid Styria, a support organisation for people affected by cancer and their relatives, is marking its 80th anniversary this year.
Around 19 people in Styria are diagnosed with cancer each day, according to the report. Graz health councillor Robert Krotzer praised Cancer Aid Styria for providing information and advice, supporting patients and their relatives, and promoting prevention, early detection and research.
