About 160 children tried different sports together at an inclusive sports day in St. Pölten on Wednesday, ORF reported. The event brought together children from special schools, primary schools, Caritas facilities and Lebenshilfe, as well as people with and without disabilities, families and accompanying adults.
Organised for the first time by the Special Olympics regional association, the event aimed to reduce barriers to interaction and show how sport can bring people together. Participants tried eight sports at indoor and outdoor stations, with respect, solidarity and mutual appreciation also in focus.
Climbing was especially popular. “Climbing, way up high,” said Maximilian, who is from Wilhelmsburg. Illona Tröls-Holzweber, head of St. Pölten Nord-Mitte Special School, said she had seen many smiling faces. What mattered, she said, was not how high anyone climbed, but that they gave it a try.
Special Olympics Lower Austria vice-president Eveline Helm said the main aim was for children to discover sports, enjoy themselves and let off steam. They might also find a hobby for their free time, she said.
Association president Wolfgang Viehauser said sport could bring people together regardless of their individual circumstances, creating opportunities for understanding, friendship and inclusion.
