An asylum accommodation centre in Bad Kreuzen, in Upper Austria’s Perg district, has been emptied and will close as asylum applications fall, ORF reports. Its residents have been moved to other accommodation, and 30 staff members will lose their jobs.
The centre most recently housed 30 asylum seekers. Andreas Achrainer, head of the Federal Agency for Care and Support Services (BBU), said it was being mothballed and would become part of the federal government’s reserve capacity. It could reopen if demand for accommodation rises.
About 4,800 people are currently receiving basic care as asylum seekers in Austria, the lowest number in 30 years. In Upper Austria, the number has fallen by about two-thirds since January 1, 2024, from 4,584 to 1,433. The number of accommodation centres in the state has dropped from 217 to 125 over the past two years.
Talks with the municipality about future uses for the building are expected in the coming days. A police dog school is also part of the discussions. The BBU said a social plan would be offered to the 30 affected employees.
The federal government is also due to close two other asylum accommodation centres in the coming days, in Finkenstein in Carinthia and Graz-Andritz.
