A private teacher-training college in Burgenland is offering a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education for the first time this semester, ORF reports.

The six-semester programme at the Private University of Education Burgenland requires no specific prior training. Of the 16 students enrolled, 15 are women and one is a man. Nearly all have no relevant school or work experience.

Rector Sabine Weisz said the course was open to school-leavers with general university entrance qualifications. Applicants can also qualify through an examination or continue their studies after attending a specialist school for early childhood education.

One student, Marco Hoffellner, attended such a school for five years before enrolling. He said he wanted to continue learning and developing professionally.

Burgenland education councillor Daniela Winkler said the academic programme would help raise the status of the profession. The first students are expected to graduate in three years and will then be able to work in kindergartens in the region.
