ÖBB buy 200 wagons for electric car transport

Austria’s Federal Railways (ÖBB) has bought 200 car transport wagons designed for heavier vehicles, including electric cars, ORF reported.

The investment is in the mid-double-digit millions of euros, the ÖBB said on Wednesday. Its Rail Cargo Group has already received 70 double-decker wagons, each with a loading length of about 30 metres. Another 130 wagons, built in Slovakia, are due to arrive next year.

The ÖBB plans to use the wagons to transport vehicles from the port of Rijeka to Central and Eastern Europe. Ships from Asia carrying wheeled cargo, including electric cars, have been arriving at the port since August.

A car train can carry up to 256 vehicles and replace as many as 37 truck journeys, the Rail Cargo Group said.
