ÖBB to suspend Karwendelbahn service for four days

The Karwendelbahn will close from October 3 to 6 for maintenance, ORF reports. Replacement buses will run during the closure, and some will carry bicycles on trailers.

The ÖBB will inspect overhead wires and safety systems, check the railway foundations, walls and culverts, and carry out repairs where needed. Some rails may be replaced, and vegetation along the tracks will be cut back.

Work is also planned at Seefeld station and at level crossings near Gießenbach stop. The ÖBB says the work will take place during the day, with no night work planned.

Passengers travelling to Hochzirl station will need to transfer to a minibus at the Abzweigung Hochzirl stop. Replacement bus information is available in the electronic timetable.

The railway has connected the Seefeld Plateau with the Innsbruck area for 114 years. Between Innsbruck and the national border near Scharnitz, the route crosses high Alpine terrain and includes 35 tunnels, galleries, bridges and viaducts.
