Graz Meerschein concerts explore five musical worlds

Five programmes will take audiences from Middle Eastern and Balkan traditions to modern classical music and klezmer in the 2026/27 Graz Meerschein concert season, ORF reports.

The concerts will take place on Sundays at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. in the baroque Minoritensaal, with each performance lasting about 70 minutes.

The season opens on November 15 with the Neva Quartet, led by Athens-born santur player Dimitri Psonis. The ensemble brings together musicians trained in European classical music and Middle Eastern traditions. Its programme combines clarinet, cello and percussion with instruments including the santur, oud and saz, drawing on music from Turkey, Armenia, Greece and the Balkans.

On December 13, Julia Lacherstorfer and the Vienna band Alma will perform “Cherubim”, reworking old songs for the Christmas season with violin, accordion, double bass and vocals. On January 10, Trio Trianima will play music by, or freely inspired by, Johannes Brahms, Dmitri Shostakovich, Ludwig van Beethoven and Justin Hurwitz, using clarinet, cello and harp.

Duo Alida will present “Tales” on February 7, blending works by Purcell, Queen and Sting with Irish traditional music through saxophone and accordion. The series concludes on March 7 with “Stories in Between”, a programme combining klezmer and classical music by Moritz Weiß and the Styrian Klezmore String Quartet.
