Diesel spill closes Bregenz City Tunnel for five hours

A crash spilled about 750 litres of diesel in the City Tunnel in Bregenz on Monday, forcing a five-hour closure in both directions, ORF Vorarlberg reported.

At about 4.30pm, a 51-year-old driver crossed into the oncoming lane for reasons that remain unclear and collided with a truck driven by a 32-year-old. The impact damaged the truck’s fuel tank. Neither driver was injured, but both vehicles sustained significant damage. Alcohol tests on both drivers were negative.

The tunnel on the A14 motorway was closed from 4.30pm to 9.15pm for the crash response and cleanup, during the evening rush hour. Police arranged detours. Vorkloster fire brigade used about 3,000 kilograms of absorbent to contain the diesel, and a road sweeper completed the cleanup.
