Wiener Neustadt completes sale of 1,646 municipal units

Wiener Neustadt has completed the sale of more than 1,600 municipal apartments and commercial units, ORF reported. The final properties were sold on Monday, with handover planned for October 1.

The last 289 units will be transferred to Erste gemeinnützige Wohnbaugesellschaft, a non-profit housing company, and Wiener Neustadt builder Mirza Sehic.

The city announced in October 2025 that it would reorganise its municipal housing. New owners were sought for 1,646 of its 2,256 apartments and commercial units, while 610 rental units, about one quarter of the total, will remain city-owned.

Some of the apartments require renovation, while high vacancy rates have placed a significant burden on the city budget. The sale is intended to save the city about 2.5 million euros a year from 2027.

The purchase price for the final tranche has not been disclosed. Officials said the sale would not change tenants contractual arrangements. Tenants will receive a joint letter from Immobilien Freizeit Parken Wiener Neustadt and the new owners.

Sehic will also attend a tenants meeting to answer questions in person. The city plans to announce the total proceeds from the sale of its municipal housing at the end of October.

The Greens in Wiener Neustadt remain critical of the sale, particularly because a large share of the apartments has passed into private ownership rather than remaining available for non-profit housing. They are calling for full transparency about the sales and a clear renovation plan.
