Oktoberfest offers discounted family day on Tuesdays

Oktoberfest holds its Family Day every Tuesday, with discounted prices on rides, food and children’s meals. BR reports that this year’s Family Days are September 22 and 29, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Many rides, showmen and food stalls offer special prices for children and families. The large festival tents also serve children’s dishes and menus at reduced rates. Some rides offer cheaper children’s tickets throughout the festival, alongside bonus cards and discounts for frequent riders. Children pay one euro, for example, on the Teufelsrad ride.

The Oide Wiesn, a traditional section of the festival, is also cheaper in some cases. Tickets for attractions such as the chair swing and chain carousel cost 1.50 euros, including on days other than Family Day.

Children are allowed in the beer tents, but only until 8 p.m. Children under six may not remain in any of the festival’s food and drink establishments in the evening, even when accompanied by their parents or other adults.

Children and teenagers under 16 may stay on the festival grounds after 8 p.m. only when accompanied by at least one parent. With their parents present, they may remain until the festival closes, but they may not stay in the beer tents.

Teenagers aged 16 and over may remain on the festival grounds without adults until closing time. They may also stay in the tents, the wine tent and Käfer until midnight.

Prams and pushchairs are allowed on the festival grounds until 6 p.m., except on Saturdays and on the public holiday October 3. Changing bags may hold no more than three litres to avoid problems at the entrance checks.

Pram parking is available at Familienplatzl, a family area on Straße 3 Ost, at the puppet theatre and Entrance 2 of the Oide Wiesn, as well as at numerous rides and festival tents. Paid parking is also available outside the grounds for five euros at luggage storage stations near the entrances.

A changing and nursing room is available until 7 p.m. at the Theresienwiese service centre, near the festival management entrance behind the Schottenhamel tent. Changing tables are also available at Familienplatzl, in tents and at numerous rides. Some children’s toilets are located near children’s carousels, at Familienplatzl and in several festival tents.

Familienplatzl is located in the eastern part of the Theresienwiese and is generally quieter than other sections. Children can ride the BabyFlug carousel and take part in tin-can throwing. Food brought from home can be heated in a microwave in the beer garden. The area has a changing table, a pram parking facility and level wooden flooring.

The Oide Wiesn is also generally less busy. At the entrances to the festival grounds, staff provide child-finder wristbands on which parents can write their telephone number. The free bands help staff contact parents if a child becomes separated from them.
