Bergisel ski jump gets seven-mast floodlight system

Work on a floodlight system at the Bergisel ski-jumping facility in Innsbruck began Tuesday, ORF reported. Seven masts, each up to 31 metres high, are being delivered for installation.

The system will consist of seven masts and 120 floodlights. It is scheduled to be used for the first time in early January during the Four Hills Tournament, when Innsbruck will host the tournament’s first women’s event.

The men’s competition will also take place in the evening this time. Organisers said the schedule would not be possible without floodlighting.

The project was initially estimated to cost 4.8 million euros. The current projected cost is 4.2 million euros.

According to Ski Austria Sportanlagen Betriebs-GmbH, electricity costs for all competition days, including lighting during setup and dismantling, will total 370 euros. The federal government and the state of Tyrol will each cover one third of the investment, while the city of Innsbruck and Ski Austria will share the remaining third.
