Safety approval delays F-35 noise test at Meiringen again

A planned hearing comparison between an F/A-18 and the new F-35 fighter jet at the Meiringen military airfield in the Bernese Oberland will not take place this autumn. SRF reported that the test was called off because the airfield lacks formal approval for its cable arresting system.

The system is required to stop the F-35 safely with its arresting hook in an emergency. The Swiss Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection, Sport and Sport said the technical requirements have been met, but certification from the responsible international authority in the F-35 programme is still pending.

The Italian Air Force proposed conducting the comparison with a go around manoeuvre using afterburners instead of landing. The VBS said a clear majority of those involved rejected the proposal.

This is the second failed attempt to hold the test. The first was scheduled for April 2026 but was cancelled at short notice by the Italian Air Force, which is due to carry out the test on behalf of Switzerland, citing operational reasons.

The comparison was requested by municipalities and interest groups in the Meiringen region. It is intended to allow residents to experience for themselves the noise of an F-35 takeoff and compare it with the current F/A-18.

The VBS is continuing to support the test and is examining whether the certification process can be accelerated. No new date has been set. Suitable runway and weather conditions will also be required. Unlike the Swiss version of the F-35, the Italian aircraft do not have a drag parachute, so landing at Meiringen will remain permitted only under suitable conditions even after the cable arresting system is approved.
