E-scooter battery sparks basement fire in Hallein

A basement fire broke out early Monday in a multi-unit building in Hallein, threatening residents, ORF reported. Firefighters believe the blaze was caused by the battery of an electric scooter.

Several crews from the volunteer fire service wearing breathing apparatus responded as heavy smoke spread through the building. One apartment was evacuated as a precaution after smoke entered through a shattered basement window.

“The smoke from the basement window was drawn directly into the apartment,” firefighter Sebastian Wass said. All other residents were able to remain in their homes.

No one was injured, but the property damage is expected to be extensive.
