Camille Awards bring European film music honours to Vienna

Vienna will host the Camille Awards for the first time on Tuesday, with prizes recognising outstanding European film composition. ORF reports that the awards ceremony will take place at the MuTh concert hall.
Patrick Doyle, the Scottish composer known for the score to “Death on the Nile”, has already been named the recipient of the Outstanding Contribution Award.
The awards will also honour this year’s leading work in three categories. In the feature film category, John Gürtler and Jan Miserre are nominated for their work on Nora Fingscheidt’s drama “The Outrun”, which centres on a woman with alcohol addiction. Also nominated are Laetitia Pansanel-Garric for “Hola Frida”, directed by André Kadi and Karine Vézina, and Italy’s Ginevra Nervi for “18 Holes to Paradise”, directed by João Nuno Pinto.
The documentary nominees are Ireland’s Anna Rice for “Our Blue World: A Water Odyssey”, directed by Ruán Magan; Sweden’s Katharina Nuttall for “Filmen om Siw (My life as Siw)”, directed by Stina Gardell; and Spain’s Joseba Beristain for “Kantauri”, directed by Isaías Cruz and Xabier Mina.
In the series category, the nominees are Iván M. Lacámara and Álvaro Peire for “Zorro”, Stefano Mainetti for “I Casi di Teresa Battaglia – Ninfa dormiente”, and Halfdan E. for “Reservatet”.
Film music performed live
The evening, hosted by Christoph Wagner-Trenkwitz, will also feature the Tonkünstler Orchestra of Lower Austria performing works by the nine nominated composers under the direction of Bernhard Philipp Eder.
The winners were selected by an international three-member jury consisting of Christian Kolonovits, Alberto Iglesias and Johan Söderqvist.
The Camille Awards were established in 2014 on the initiative of Bernard Grimaldi, vice-president of the European Composer and Songwriter Alliance. They were named after Camille Saint-Saëns, the composer of the first music written specifically for a feature film, “The Assassination of the Duke of Guise”. The awards recognise outstanding European film music in the categories of feature film, documentary and music for a series.
