Munich airport lifts 100-millilitre hand luggage liquids limit

Munich Airport will allow passengers to carry drinks, shampoo, perfume and other liquids in containers of up to two litres in their hand luggage from Friday, BR reported, ending the remaining 100-millilitre restriction.

Bavaria’s Transport Ministry said all 60 security lanes at the airport have now been equipped with computed tomography scanners. The technology is designed to detect liquid explosives automatically and can scan larger quantities of liquids.

The 100-millilitre rule was introduced across the European Union 20 years ago after terrorists in Britain tried to smuggle liquid explosives onto aircraft in soft drink containers.

Containers holding more than two litres must still be placed in checked baggage.

The conversion to CT technology cost around 45 million euros, according to the ministry. The change comes in time for the start of Oktoberfest, which the ministry said would make travel more convenient.

Nuremberg Airport lifted its liquids restriction in May. Memmingen Airport is expected to receive the technology as part of its next terminal expansion.

Passengers travelling on connecting flights should check the rules at their transfer airport before packing, as different restrictions may apply there.
