Housing cooperative to build 70-unit senior village in Bad Sauerbrunn

The Oberwarter Siedlungsgenossenschaft plans to build a senior village with around 70 housing units in Bad Sauerbrunn within three years, ORF reports. The project will replace the former Rosengarten care home, which has been closed for about two years following its insolvency.

No new care home will be built on the site. Instead, the project will focus on housing for older people, Bad Sauerbrunn Mayor Gerhard Hutter said. Residents are expected to retain their independence while having care and support services nearby.

The former Villa Bank, which served as the provisional seat of the state government 100 years ago and was most recently used as a care home, will be converted into around 30 small apartments with a shared-living format.

Another 35 units will be newly built. Construction of seven single-storey bungalows on open land beside the former care home is scheduled to begin next spring.

The housing cooperative is financing the project itself after recently buying the site. OSG managing director Alfred Kollar did not provide an exact cost estimate, but said a project with more than 70 units would involve a clearly double-digit million-euro sum.

The entire senior village is expected to be completed and ready for occupancy by the end of 2029.
