Police found about 15 kilograms of ecstasy tablets and a smaller quantity of heroin in a car in Völkermarkt, ORF Kärnten reported. The police confirmed the seizure to ORF after it was first reported by Kronen Zeitung.
Officers had observed a 34-year-old Bosnian man handing drugs to a customer in the town. They then searched his car and found the drugs.
The man did not say during his initial questioning where he intended to take the drugs. He was arrested and is now in pre-trial detention on suspicion that he could reoffend or obstruct the investigation, including by warning possible accomplices. His mobile phone has not yet been examined.
According to duty lawyer Herbert Rung, the man has no previous convictions in Austria. Investigators are still checking whether he has a criminal record abroad. The drugs are believed to have had a street value of several hundred thousand euros.
