Teen accused of forcing chicken to drink beer gets diversion

An 18-year-old appeared before Wels Regional Court on Tuesday over allegations of animal cruelty and property damage, ORF reported. The case ended with a diversion.

Prosecutors alleged that he forced a chicken to drink beer in June 2025 and went on a vandalism spree with other teenagers between July and October 2025. He was accused of throwing a park bench, several road signs and a bicycle into the Traun river, as well as damaging other public property.

The chicken was allegedly stolen with several acquaintances in the Wels-Land district. The group is said to have put the animal in a plastic sack and transported it by car. Investigators said they later cut a hole in the sack so the chicken could breathe.

The defendant reportedly told investigators that he had found the incident “very funny”. According to a report by the Kronen Zeitung, a video allegedly shows beer being poured into the animal.

Under the diversion agreement, the 18-year-old must compensate the victims for the damage and complete 40 hours of community service. He has not received a criminal conviction for the time being.

Juvenile criminal law was applied because he was under 18 when the alleged offences took place. A diversion can be used under certain conditions, including when the offence does not involve serious guilt and the person accepts responsibility.
