Munich airport to allow liquids in hand luggage up to two litres

Munich Airport will lift its remaining 100 millilitre limit for liquids in hand luggage from Friday, BR reported. Passengers will then be able to carry drinks, shampoo, perfume and other liquids in containers holding up to two litres.

Containers larger than two litres must still be packed in checked luggage, which passengers hand over at check-in.

The restriction had been introduced across the European Union 20 years ago after terrorists in Britain tried to smuggle liquid explosives onto aircraft in soft drink containers. New computed tomography scanners can automatically detect liquid explosives and examine larger quantities of liquids.

Forty security lanes at Munich Airport had been equipped with the technology by the start of the holiday season. All 60 lanes have now been converted, according to the Bavarian Transport Ministry. The upgrade cost about 45 million euros.

Nuremberg Airport ended its liquids restriction in May. Memmingen Airport is expected to receive the CT technology as part of its next terminal expansion.
