Hannes Germann will leave Swiss Council of States in 2027

SVP Council of States member Hannes Germann will not stand for re-election in 2027, SRF reported. He has represented the canton of Schaffhausen in the chamber since 2002, making him its longest-serving member.

The 70-year-old politician served as president of the Council of States in 2013 and was most recently re-elected in 2023. He announced his decision at the start of the autumn session in a video on X.

“I will not stand for another term in 2027. In the end, you should stop when things are at their best,” Germann said. He plans to remain focused on the challenges facing parliament until then, including major issues in the current session.
