ORF reported that a 17-year-old Slovak man fled a police check in Steyr early Saturday, driving at speeds of up to 150 kilometres per hour. Two 18-year-old passengers told police they feared for their lives during the chase.
Police attempted to stop the teenager at around 6 a.m. on Aschacher Straße in Steyr, in the Steyr-Land district. He drove through Garsten at high speed while officers tried to follow him, initially managing to evade the patrol before continuing towards Aschach an der Steyr.
During the escape, the vehicle hit and killed a roe deer. Shortly after the locality of Aschach, the teenager stopped and ended the pursuit. Police then found that he did not have a driving licence. They temporarily seized the car because of the severe speeding offence.
The two passengers from Steyr said they had shouted at the driver to stop.
