Nico Wiener wins prestigious compound archery World Cup final

Nico Wiener won the elite World Cup final in compound archery in Saltillo, Mexico, defeating the world number one in a closely contested final, ORF reported.

Only the seven best athletes in the event and one wildcard entry from the host country had qualified for the competition.

Wiener, 29, from Schreibersdorf in the Oberwart district of southern Burgenland, beat France’s Nicolas Girad in the quarter-finals and Colombia’s Pablo Gomez in the semi-finals.

In the final, he faced Denmark’s Mathias Fullerton, the world number one. Wiener ultimately prevailed in a tense contest to claim the prestigious title.

After his victory, Wiener thanked his mother for looking after him at the event, as well as his father and the rest of his family.
