Bus driver investigated after fatal Hebertshausen crash

BR reported that prosecutors are investigating a bus driver on suspicion of negligent homicide after a June collision near Hebertshausen in Bavaria’s Dachau district killed a second-grade pupil and injured dozens of children and a teacher.

A preliminary expert report found that the driver’s scheduled-service bus crossed into oncoming traffic on a bend and collided with a coach, a spokesperson for the Munich II public prosecutor’s office said.

The scheduled-service bus was carrying only its driver. The coach was carrying a primary school class from Haimhausen. Dozens of pupils and a teacher suffered injuries, some of them serious.

It remains unclear why the scheduled-service bus entered the opposite lane, the spokesperson said. The investigation is continuing, and prosecutors have commissioned another expert report. Its findings are not yet available.

The prosecutor’s office stressed that the driver is presumed innocent until a final conviction.

The collision caused widespread shock and sympathy in Hebertshausen, a municipality with about 5,600 residents.
