ÖBB add 27 double-decker trains to Styria’s regional network

ÖBB presented new regional trains in Graz on Wednesday, with 27 modernised double-decker units set to enter service in Styria, ORF reported. The trains are designed to provide more seats, comfort and accessibility.
Each four-car train has 416 seats. The first 17 units will begin operating on the S1 route between Spielfeld and Mürzzuschlag on September 13. A further 10 trains will be introduced on the S3 between Graz Hauptbahnhof and St. Gotthard when the timetable changes in December.
More capacity and improved access
ÖBB said the Cityjet double-decker trains would respond to rising demand for regional rail travel. Their design uses the existing infrastructure efficiently and provides more space within the same platform length.
The modernised trains include adjustable comfort seats, Wi-Fi, USB charging points and a new passenger information system. Low-floor entrances, wheelchair spaces and an accessible toilet are intended to make boarding easier. Multi-purpose areas provide space for bicycles and pushchairs.
“With the modernised trains, we are offering significantly more seats and strengthening the S-Bahn as the backbone of public transport in the region,” said Sabine Stock of ÖBB passenger transport.
ÖBB said it would invest about 800 million euros in modernising and converting vehicles by 2030.
