Burgenland starts school year with 33,000 pupils

About 33,000 children and young people are starting the new school year in Burgenland on Monday, ORF reported. The region has no school closures planned for 2026/27, and all teaching positions have been filled.

The total includes 2,850 children starting school for the first time. Pupil numbers have remained stable compared with the previous year.

Schools are expected to place greater emphasis on democracy education, sustainability and artificial intelligence, particularly in compulsory education.

A nationwide headscarf ban also takes effect at schools this year. Girls up to the age of 14 may not wear a headscarf at school. Burgenland’s education authorities expect no difficulties with the ban in the region.

Applications for school-start funding also open on September 7. The payment is granted once to every child of compulsory school age.
