Police are investigating after several exotic parrots were found in a forest in Schlatt, a municipality in Upper Austria’s Vöcklabruck district, ORF reported. The birds appear to have been left there, and authorities are trying to identify who abandoned them.

A cyclist alerted the animal welfare organisation Tierengel Austria on Thursday. The group has since been working to rescue the birds, and three have been captured so far.

A box containing several eggs was also found in a tree, suggesting that the parrots may have been intended for breeding, according to the Kronen Zeitung, as reported on Saturday afternoon.

Five more parrots remain in the wild in what animal welfare officials described as an unsuitable habitat.

Anyone who sees or hears one of the birds is asked to take a photograph, record the exact location and contact Tierengel Austria.
